Gaja – Barbaresco DOCG 2019 – 1.5 L Magnum
Piedmont, Italy – 100% Nebbiolo
An iconic Barbaresco from an exceptional year
Gaja's Barbaresco 2019 is a masterpiece that captures the essence of Barbaresco's terroir. This year, Gaja decided not to bottle any cru separately; all the top grapes from the 14 vineyards were blended for this wine, resulting in an exceptionally balanced and expressive Barbaresco.
Tasting notes
Bright ruby red with garnet reflections. The nose opens with aromas of wild strawberries, rose petals, violets and subtle hints of spices and cedar. On the palate a silky texture with flavors of ripe cherries, raspberries, liquorice and a hint of coffee. The wine is elegantly structured with lively acidity and fine-grained tannins, leading to a long, mineral and floral finish.
Food pairing
Excellent with dishes such as mushroom risotto, roast lamb, ossobuco, game dishes and mature hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano.
Reviews & Awards

97 points – The Wine Independent (Susan Hulme):
“Gaja's 2019 Barbaresco was bottled only a few days before this tasting but it already has sweet roses and red fruits on the nose with very subtle, gentle spice notes. It has a great texture and flows gracefully across the palate. It feels very harmonious with plenty of refreshing acidity and finely integrated tannins.” -
96 points – Falstaff :
“Clear, luminous ruby garnet. Fragrant, finely marked nose of raspberry, rose petals and ripe cherries, inviting. Polished, fine-meshed tannins characterize the wine in the mouth, like a fine coat, salty, lots of ripe cherry, long finish.” -
95 points – Wine Spectator :
“A complex red, this reveals multidimensional aromas and flavors of rose, cherry, licorice, mineral and spices. This is fused to a vibrant structure that, for now, gives a taut, almost racy profile. Marrying power and grace, this ends in a long, floral- and spice-tinged aftertaste.” -
94 points – James Suckling :
“This has aromas of iron, mineral, bitter chocolate, wild strawberries, raw walnuts, orange peel and decayed roses. Medium- to full-bodied, with sleek and very chalky tannins. Lots of fruit on the palate with a fine, fresh and mineral end. Pure and linear.”
Vinification & Maturation
The grapes from each vineyard are fermented separately and aged in oak barrels for 12 months. The wines are then blended and aged in wood for another 12 months, resulting in a wine with complexity and balance.
