Collection: GAYA
The history of Gaja wine begins in 1859, the year in which Giovanni Gaja, a local grape grower in Barbaresco, Piedmont, founded a small winery under his own name.
Gaja is widely recognized as one of Italy's most revolutionary wineries. This revolution began in 1961 with the entry of Angelo Gaja, great-grandson of Giovanni, as winemaker.
Angelo introduced green harvesting and malolactic conversion in Piemonte, among other things, and laid the foundation for the modern crus of the Langhe. Through his contemporary insights and idiosyncrasy, Angelo Gaja not only gained fame for his own wines, but also put Piemonte on the international wine map in one fell swoop. The fact that Angelo Gaja did not adhere to tradition and rules is reflected in the fact that he planted international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as early as the 1970s. In the 1990s, he also joined the select club of Super Tuscan producers, who grow international grape varieties in Tuscany – completely against wine legislation. The results are spectacular and Gaja conquers the world with his beautiful Barbarescos – the company's showpiece.
The most recent addition to the portfolio is the IDDA vineyard, located on the slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. Since 2004, Gaia Gaja has been at the helm of the winery. Together with her sister Rosanna and brother Giovanni, she continues the family tradition of producing exceptionally fine wines. They share the same values as their father and work enthusiastically on innovative ideas to continuously guarantee the quality of the wines. In his time, Angelo did not want to conform to what he saw as the restrictive Italian system of designations of origin. He had the Single Vineyard wines downgraded, these were the Sori Tildin, Costa Russi, Sori San Lorenzo, Sperss and Conteisa, as he added a small percentage of barbera to the wines. His children have decided to work exclusively with nebbiolo grapes for the Single Vineyard wines in the future. Because the wines are now made from 100% nebbiolo, the names Barbaresco and Barolo officially returned to the label.
