Poderi Luigi Einaudi – Barolo Monvigliero 2018
Barolo DOCG, Piedmont – 100% Nebbiolo
A debut of exceptional finesse and elegance
The Barolo Monvigliero 2018 marks the first vintage of this cru within the Poderi Luigi Einaudi range, launched in honour of the winery’s 125th anniversary. Sourced from a 1.5-hectare vineyard at 400 metres altitude in Verduno, with 40-year-old Nebbiolo vines deeply rooted in chalky and gypsum-rich soils, this wine embodies the unique expression of the Monvigliero terroir.
Tasting notes In the glass the wine presents itself with an intense garnet red colour with ruby red reflections. The nose reveals aromas of red forest fruits, fresh plums, floral notes and a hint of spice. On the palate the wine is fresh and juicy, with firm tannins and a youthful, tight structure.
Reviews & Awards
-
94 points – Vinous : "The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero is a magnificent wine, especially for a first release in this challenging year. Intensely aromatic, light and ethereal, with striking complexity. Silky tannins give this weightless, beautifully transparent Barolo a real sense of finesse."
-
91 points – James Suckling : "Aromas of freshly cut strawberries and lemon. Medium body, firm and silky tannins and a linear finish. Firm and lively."
-
90 points – Falstaff : "Intense garnet red with ruby reflections. On the nose notes of red forest fruits and fresh plums, with a hint of herbs and floral accents. On the palate very fresh and juicy, with firm tannins, currently still very young and tight."
Vinification & Maturation The grapes are fermented in concrete vats, followed by maturation in large oak barrels for 24 to 36 months. Only after 38 months does this Barolo leave the cellars of Poderi Luigi Einaudi.
Food pairing This Barolo is an excellent companion to classic dishes such as ossobuco, risotto with truffles or pasta funghi. Thanks to its high acidity, it also goes well with typical Italian dishes with tomato sauce.
