Poderi Luigi Einaudi – Barolo Monvigliero 2018 – 1.5L Giftbox
Piedmont, Italy – 100% Nebbiolo
An elegant and refined Barolo from the prestigious Monvigliero cru
The Barolo Monvigliero 2018 marks the first vintage of this cru within the Poderi Luigi Einaudi portfolio, celebrating the winery’s 125th anniversary. Sourced from a 1.5-hectare vineyard in Verduno, known for its calcareous and chalky soils, this wine expresses finesse and complexity. The vines, planted between 1969 and 1980, benefit from a south-eastern to south-western exposure at 220–310 metres.
Tasting notes
Intense garnet red with ruby reflections. On the nose aromas of roses, red berries, fresh plums, spices and a floral touch. On the palate fresh and juicy, with gripping tannins and a youthful, tight structure. The finish is long and consistent, with a lively acidity that gives the wine elegance and length.
Food pairing
This Barolo goes well with classic Italian dishes such as ossobuco, risotto with truffles, pasta funghi and dishes with tomato sauce. Also delicious with grilled red meat and mature cheeses.
Reviews & Awards
-
94 points – Vinous (Antonio Galloni):
“The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero is a fabulous wine, especially for a first release and in this tricky vintage. Intensely aromatic, lifted and ethereal, with striking complexity, the 2018 captures all of the essential signatures of this great Verduno site.” -
95 points – Kerin O'Keefe :
“Blue flower, crushed mint and woodland berry aromas shape the lovely nose along with spice and forest floor notes. Full-bodied but weightless, the elegant palate features tart cherry, crushed strawberry and baking spice alongside velvety, fine-grained tannins.” -
91 points – James Suckling :
“Freshly sliced strawberry and lemon aromas. Medium body, firm and silky tannins and a linear finish. Firm and racy.” -
90 points – Falstaff :
"Intensive Granatrot with rubinroten Reflexen. In the fresh wood and fresh pflaumen, in the night with freshness and a floral touch. Am Gaumen so fresh and saftig, with griffigem Tannin, will be active nor fresh young and karg."
Vinification & Maturation
The grapes are harvested by hand and undergo fermentation in concrete vats at controlled temperatures (27–30°C), with a post-fermentative maceration of 22–25 days. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for 24 months in large oak barrels, followed by a bottle ageing of at least 14 months.
