Douro, Portugal – Blend of traditional grape varieties

A rare and majestic Tawny Port from the heart of the Douro Valley

Taylor's Very Old Single Harvest Port 1970 is an exceptional Tawny Port, produced from a single harvest and matured in oak barrels for five decades in the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia. This wine represents the art of long-term wood aging, resulting in a Port of unparalleled complexity and elegance.

    Tasting notes
Light mahogany brown with a golden sheen and olive green reflections. On the nose a layered and multidimensional aromas of freshly sawn wood, tobacco leaf, cedar, balsam and citrus. On opening appear scents of marzipan, walnut, coffee, raisins, plums and spices such as black pepper and cardamom. On the palate the wine is velvety, rich, concentrated and opulent, with notes of coffee, butterscotch, walnut and candied orange peel. Despite its age this tawny tastes surprisingly fresh and has lively acidity and an exceptionally long finish.

    Food pairing
Excellent with desserts such as crème brûlée, tiramisu, nut tarts or a plate of wild strawberries. Also delicious in combination with blue cheeses, figs or as a digestive with roasted nuts.

    Reviews & Awards

    • 98 pointsDecanter (Richard Mayson) : “Pale red-mahogany in color with an olive-green tinge to the rim. Gloriously lifted and maderised on the nose with a touch of sultana, molasses and roasted coffee. Rich and beautifully intense on the palate; a smooth, slightly syrupy resonance offset by a lithe streak of acidity, which keeps the wine fresh all the way through. Long and languorous on the finish, with lovely toasty, malty complexity. Superb laidback and hedonistic.”

    • 97+ pointsFarr Vintners : “A tawny to mahogany hue with bright golden edges. An opulent, intense and hedonistic nose of freshly roasted coffee beans, chocolate, Asian spices, clove, camphor & woodsmoke. The glass exudes warmth; figgy, with a Madeira-like edge to it. Thick and palate-coating with a succulent, velvety texture. Wonderful opulent sweetness on the mid-palate followed by the clean refreshing cut of lively acidity making the wine vibrant and racy. Nice balance and tension. Really impressive stuff!”

    • 95 pointsGismondi on Wine (Anthony Gismondi) : “The 1970 release is number seven in the series, and I think one of the best. The nose and the palate are off the charts in intensity, apparently layer after layer of luscious, mellow flavors of coffee, butterscotch, walnuts, cigar, and candied citrus. The finish goes on forever. A fabulous gift for any 50th celebration. Ready to drink and does not require decanting.”
